Vattenfall markets balancing power from offshore wind for the first time with 200 MW from Veja Mate

Vattenfall is for the first time marketing balancing power from an offshore wind farm, offering 200 MW of grid-stabilisation capacity from the 416 MW Veja Mate project in the German North Sea after pre-qualification in TenneT's control area - the highest balancing capacity offered from offshore wind to date.

Vattenfall is marketing balancing power from an offshore wind farm in Germany for the first time, offering 200 MW of capacity from the 416 MW Veja Mate project in the North Sea, reNEWS reported October 19. The wind farm has been pre-qualified to provide balancing power in the control area of transmission system operator TenneT, and Vattenfall says the 200 MW is the highest balancing power capacity offered from offshore wind to date.

Veja Mate sits about 95 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum and comprises 67 turbines generating enough electricity to supply the equivalent of 450,000 households. The project is owned by a consortium of Commerz Real, Ingka Group, KGAL Group and wpd invest, with Vattenfall acting as direct marketer for the electricity generated.

The pre-qualification lets the wind farm participate in Germany's balancing energy market, where transmission system operators procure capacity to cover short-term deviations between generation and consumption and keep grid frequency at 50 Hertz. Vattenfall says offshore wind is well suited to grid support because wind conditions at sea are generally consistent and predictable.

"Electricity from renewable sources is not only indispensable when it comes to combating climate change and making the energy transition a success," said Christian Sdralek, responsible for the renewable energy portfolio at Vattenfall. "It can also make an important contribution to the stability of the power system."

Vattenfall already provides balancing services through flexible pumped storage plants with a combined 2.7 GW, and says it is pursuing further pre-qualifications for additional renewable assets, including offshore wind farms, solar parks paired with large batteries and third-party battery storage systems.
