Vattenfall awards Fluence contract for planned 254 MW Brunsbuttel battery
The October 14 agreement covers more than 1000 MWh of storage and long-term service. Construction is planned for 2027 and operation for late 2028, not current grid capacity.

Vattenfall announced on October 14, 2026 that it has signed a delivery and long-term service agreement with Fluence for the planned battery facility in Brunsbuttel, Germany. The release specifies 254 megawatts of power and more than 1000 megawatt-hours of storage. These are planned project specifications, not capacity already supplying the grid.
The project is to occupy the site of the former Brunsbuttel nuclear power plant, which is being decommissioned. Vattenfall plans to begin construction in 2027 and bring the battery and its connection to the 50Hertz 380-kV transmission network into operation by the end of 2028. Those dates are targets, not completed milestones.
The design provides around four hours of storage and uses Fluence's Gridstack Pro 5000 platform. Power in megawatts measures the rate of discharge; energy in megawatt-hours measures the quantity stored. A four-hour design does not mean the battery can supply every local customer through an arbitrarily long outage.
According to Vattenfall, the contract covers battery systems, power electronics and energy-management software. Fluence is to deliver the project on a turnkey basis, including planning, procurement, construction, commissioning and long-term service. The release does not give a contract price or a household electricity-bill estimate.
Vattenfall describes the installation as its largest battery project to date and part of its flexibility strategy. It says the facility is intended to support grid stability and renewable integration. These are the developer's planned uses, not independently measured operating results or a guarantee of revenue.
The October 14 news is the technology-supply and service agreement. It should not be confused with a completed plant opening. Delivery, construction, grid connection and commissioning remain ahead; the release does not establish realized emissions savings or a fixed financial return.
