Tesla Powershare extends home backup to eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles

Tesla documents home-backup support for eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with compatible Powerwall equipment. This is not a $595 complete installation or Model 3/Model Y grid-export service.

Tesla documents Powershare home-backup capability for eligible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, extending a feature previously associated with Cybertruck. Canary Media reported the expansion on October 6. The current Tesla support pages describe eligibility and equipment limits, so the feature should not be assumed to work with every older car or every home charger.

Tesla says new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 are capable of Powershare. Some earlier vehicles also qualify, but not all. Its support page directs owners to check for an enabled Powershare Support field in vehicle information with the required firmware.

For Model 3 and Model Y home backup, Tesla describes a Powerwall-based configuration with a compatible Wall Connector or Universal Wall Connector. The equipment must be connected and paired as Tesla specifies. Its product page identifies Powerwall 3 support while describing Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility as coming later.

Canary Media reported a $595 Wall Connector price and an $8,200 Powerwall 3 price before installation at publication. The charger price is not the total cost of making an unequipped home backup-ready. Electrical work, installed equipment and site requirements change the cost; these historical reported prices are not a current installation quote.

Tesla's support estimates vary by vehicle trim and assume average household use of 30 kWh per day and a 90% vehicle charge. Standard Model 3 and Model Y trims are listed at up to two days of additional backup, while Premium and Performance trims are listed at over two days. Actual duration depends on consumption, charge and other equipment.

Home backup is different from selling energy to the grid. Tesla says Powershare Grid Support is available for Cybertruck in limited markets and is not available for Model 3 or Model Y. The sources do not establish guaranteed utility earnings, universal interconnection approval or a fixed number of outage days for every household.
