Tesla extends Powershare home backup to compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles

Tesla says US and Puerto Rico Model 3 and Model Y orders after October 1 support Powershare. Home backup requires Powerwall and compatible charging equipment; older vehicles need a compatibility check.

Tesla has expanded its Powershare home-backup support to compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Its current support page says all vehicles in those two lines ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 are capable of Powershare. Some earlier vehicles support it, but not all.

Owners of earlier Model 3 or Model Y vehicles should check Software, then Additional Vehicle Information on the vehicle touchscreen. Tesla says the Powershare Support toggle is enabled on capable vehicles. This is not a promise that every existing Tesla can provide home backup through a software update.

For a home with Powerwall, Tesla lists a compatible vehicle, Powerwall and either a Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3 as required equipment. The Powerwall and Wall Connector must be on the same Wi-Fi network, registered to the same site and paired. Tesla tells owners who meet these conditions to contact Customer Support to enable the feature.

Tesla estimates up to two days of backup for Model 3 Standard and Model Y Standard, and over two days for Premium and Performance trims. Those estimates assume average home use of 30 kilowatt-hours per day and a vehicle battery charged to 90 percent. Actual duration varies with the vehicle, home demand, solar equipment and starting charge.

The expansion does not mean home backup is free. Equipment and electrical installation needs depend on the existing system. Canary Media's October 6 reporting explains that Tesla puts the power-conversion hardware in the vehicle rather than requiring a separate DC bidirectional charger. We have not independently priced a complete installation for a specific home.

Home backup is also distinct from selling power to the grid. Tesla's support page describes Grid Support enrollment for Cybertruck in regions with active programs. It says co-optimization of Powershare with Powerwall for Grid Support is not currently supported. Model 3 and Model Y owners should not assume backup compatibility means they can now earn grid-export payments.
