Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has issued a competitive tender for a 187.5 MW, 750 MWh standalone battery energy storage system at the Maheswaram 400/220 kV substation in Telangana. The four-hour duration facility will be built under a tariff-based competitive bidding process conducted by state utility TGGENCO, with viability gap funding support through the Power System Development Fund.
Under the tender structure, POWERGRID will pre-select a qualified bidder to partner with it in TGGENCO's build-own-operate process; the pre-selected bidder cannot participate independently or through subsidiaries. The selected contractor handles design, supply, erection, testing, commissioning, and operation and maintenance of the system.
The tender requires the battery complex to be completed within 15 months of contract award, followed by 15 years of comprehensive maintenance. The online bid submission deadline is October 19, 2026.
Siting grid-scale storage at Maheswaram, a key transmission interchange serving the Hyderabad region, is aimed at absorbing midday solar surpluses and discharging during evening peaks, easing congestion from southern India's rapid renewable buildout. The award itself has not been made; this is a procurement notice, not a project completion.
