New York picks 950 MW of battery storage in its first big storage solicitation

NYSERDA selected eight grid-scale battery projects, the first of three annual rounds toward the state's 6 GW by 2030 storage target.

New York has picked eight large battery storage projects totaling 950 megawatts in its first solicitation for "Bulk" grid-scale storage. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced the selections on Sept. 23, along with contracts for 13 land-based renewable energy projects totaling 719 megawatts, Energy-Storage.news reported.

The solicitation is the first of three annual requests for proposals to be issued by 2027, each seeking about a gigawatt of grid-connected storage. The program comes from the state's Energy Storage Roadmap 2.0, which lays out how New York plans to reach its target of 6 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030.

The contracts use an Index Storage Credit. NYSERDA sets a guaranteed strike price for stored energy sold into the NYISO market. If a project earns more than the strike price, it pays the difference back; if it earns less, NYSERDA tops it up. Payments start once a project is running, and the projects are expected to be in service by the end of 2030.

NYSERDA did not name developers, but Energy-Storage.news research matched the eight projects: Lighthouse Energy Storage (GCI with Neoen, Chautauqua County, 250 MW / 1,000 MWh), Zenobe Burns (Allegany County, 100 MW), Eastwater Energy Storage (GCI, Monroe County, 100 MW), KCE NY 5 (Key Capture Energy, Ulster County, 94 MW), Blue Spruce Storage (Flatiron Energy, Bronx, 133 MW / 532 MWh), Palladium Storage (Flatiron Energy, Bronx, 123 MW / 492 MWh), Holtsville Energy Storage (Savion, Suffolk County, 110 MW) and KCE NY 37 (Key Capture Energy, Suffolk County, 150 MW).
