Britain's grid operator forecasts 5.9 GW surplus and secure power supplies for winter 2026/27

Great Britain's National Energy System Operator projects a 5.9 GW electricity surplus this winter - a 9.5% capacity margin above peak demand - in its Winter Outlook published October 23, 2026, crediting battery storage growth and a revised wind capacity assessment. National Gas separately confirmed adequate gas supplies for heating and power generation.

Great Britain's electricity supplies are expected to remain secure throughout winter 2026/27, with a forecast generation surplus of 5.9 gigawatts despite continued instability in global energy markets, the National Energy System Operator said in its Winter Outlook published October 23, 2026.

NESO forecasts a 9.5% capacity margin above expected peak electricity demand - broadly comparable with winter 2025/26 and higher than the margins seen during the 2022 European energy crisis. The operational assessment covers the five-month period from October 31, 2026 through March 31, 2027.

To stress-test the system, the operator ran 30,000 scenarios for each day of the winter, modeling severe cold snaps, generator outages, demand fluctuations and low wind output. NESO credited the rapid growth of utility-scale battery energy storage, alongside diverse offshore wind and flexible gas assets, with providing the real-time flexibility needed to manage peak evening consumption.

The operator also updated its capacity evaluation methodology to better capture the relationship between renewable availability and demand. The revision moderately increased the assumed Effective Firm Capacity of Britain's wind fleet, producing a higher de-rated margin than in NESO's preliminary winter assessment. In a companion outlook, National Gas forecast sufficient gas supplies to meet demand, including during periods of peak electricity consumption.
