Enlight Renewable Energy and ENERTRAG announced the start of construction on the Bertikow battery energy storage project in Brandenburg, Germany, on October 15. The release follows an October 13 groundbreaking ceremony; the announcement date and ceremony date are different.
The jointly owned project has a power rating of 200 megawatts and approximately 840 megawatt-hours of energy storage capacity. Megawatts describe power, while megawatt-hours describe stored energy. These are project specifications, not measurements of electricity already delivered.
The project is near the Bertikow substation in the municipality of Uckerfelde. The developers say it has secured land rights and grid access, completed its handover from development to construction, and is now under construction.
Commercial operation is currently targeted for the first half of 2028. Once operating, the developers expect the battery to participate in German day-ahead, intraday and ancillary-service markets. The statement does not show that those services are being delivered today.
The project has a seven-year offtake agreement with EDF Trading for part of its capacity, and Entrix will optimize the asset. The release does not disclose contract pricing or the exact share of capacity covered by the agreement.
The developers describe the project as a source of flexibility for balancing supply and demand. That is an intended role, not a quantified reduction in household bills, curtailment or emissions. Construction completion and commissioning remain the practical milestones to watch.
