Electric truck sales reach 158,000 in first half of 2026, BloombergNEF finds

BloombergNEF reported on September 29 that global sales of medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks reached a record 158,000 in the first half of 2026, up 75% from the same period of 2025. Practically all were battery-electric. More than nine in ten were sold in China, where electric models represented about 20% of total truck sales. In Europe, electric trucks made up 5.5% of first-half truck sales, with shares above 10% in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden. BloombergNEF says the U.S. market has slowed nearly to a standstill amid policy and cost headwinds. Industry participants interviewed by BloombergNEF estimated Tesla Semi prices of $250,000 to $300,000 per truck. BloombergNEF calculates that this could undercut an equivalent diesel truck's total cost of ownership in some duty cycles, depending on charging costs; it is not a universal fleet-savings claim. Charging economics remain a constraint: BloombergNEF estimates operators would need roughly $0.10 to $0.22 per kilowatt-hour above electricity cost to recover investment in high-power stations, with utilization varying by site. Financiers are starting to underwrite some electric truck deals against contracted freight operations rather than relying only on resale value, BloombergNEF reports. The takeaway for fleets is a sharply growing global market with uneven regional uptake and charging economics that still need case-by-case evaluation.
