DOE space-solar research applications close October 8 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern

DOE lists up to $12 million for space-photovoltaic R&D. The live TECHWERX opportunity confirms tonight's deadline and a 20 percent minimum non-federal cost share; this is not a household solar rebate.

Applications for the U.S. Department of Energy's Space Photovoltaics Research and Development opportunity are due October 8, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern. DOE's program page and the live TECHWERX opportunity page both list that deadline.

DOE announced the opportunity on August 31. It remains relevant as an open-deadline funding notice, not a newly launched October program. The agency lists up to $12 million for research that could reduce costs and expand domestic manufacturing capabilities for solar panels used in space.

Topic 1 covers early-stage photovoltaic technology and testing, with individual awards up to $1.5 million. Topic 2 focuses on space-PV manufacturing R&D and prototype validation, with individual awards up to $2 million. These are potential award limits, not funding already distributed.

TECHWERX lists institutions of higher education, nonprofit entities and for-profit entities as eligible lead participants. Both topics require a minimum 20 percent non-federal cost share. Applicants must check the full eligibility rules and cost-share calculation in the opportunity materials.

The opportunity page links to the project narrative template, summary slide template and its application form. The application requires a domestic-entity certification. Reading the form is not an eligibility determination or submission; prospective applicants must make their own accurate certifications.

The work concerns durable, efficient photovoltaic devices and manufacturing or test capabilities for space missions. It is not a household rooftop-solar rebate, an individual job-training grant or evidence that space-based power is already being supplied to customers.

DOE expects selection notifications in December 2026 and award negotiations in January-February 2027. Those are expected program milestones, not guaranteed awards. Full requirements and the submission route are available at https://www.techwerx.org/opportunities/IESO-SPACEPV.
