Central Georgia Electric Membership Corporation and Base Power announced a plan on October 13 to deploy 50 megawatts of residential battery storage across the cooperative's service territory. The first installations are scheduled for 2027. Utility Dive reported on the project October 20; the planned capacity is not a fleet already installed today.
The joint announcement and Base's current member page describe a $95 installation charge with no additional monthly fee for participating Central Georgia EMC members. The announcement says members continue paying normal cooperative rates for the electricity their homes use. This is not a free-electricity offer or a program available to every Georgia household.
Base says it will install the batteries outside homes and handle service and maintenance for the life of each battery. The cooperative will control when the networked fleet charges and discharges, using low-price periods and system peaks to manage capacity and energy costs.
The system combines local backup with a grid role. A 50 MW fleet target describes power capacity, not how many hours every home will stay powered. Utility Dive attributes an up-to-36-hour backup claim for a 39.2-kWh battery to Base; that vendor claim is not a guaranteed runtime for every home or a measured result from this future Georgia deployment.
Utility Dive reports that proposed and developing data centers could increase demand in the cooperative's territory, including a planned 240 MW Equinix campus near Hampton. The battery project aims to reduce system peaks and capacity obligations. Neither the announcement nor the report quantifies an approved household rate reduction or proves future data-center costs cannot raise bills.
The organizations call this Base's first utility partnership outside Texas. Members can review the program and eligibility through the cooperative-specific page. The announcement gives a 2027 installation start, not a completed rollout date, and does not establish that every interested home qualifies or that all 50 MW will be operating immediately.
