Bulgaria broke ground on Tuesday on a 300 MWh battery energy storage park in Tvarditsa, in the southeastern Sliven Region, the state news agency BTA reported. The five-hour storage system will use 80 Tesla Megapack 2XL units paired with 20 transformers of 4.4 MVA each.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev, Innovation and Digital Transformation Minister Ivan Vasilev, Energy Minister Iva Petrova and Tesla representatives attended the ceremony. The Tvarditsa site is the first of three planned systems being built by Asarel-Trade and Power Profit in partnership with Tesla, under an investment program valued at more than EUR 350 million; the three projects together will exceed 2,300 MWh of storage capacity.
Radev said Bulgaria already holds a leading position in Europe for battery storage capacity relative to the size of its electricity system, and argued that reliable storage is a prerequisite for economic growth and lower electricity prices.
Petrova said storage systems totalling over 6 GW have been implemented in Bulgaria in less than a year and a half, helping secure energy supplies during critical summer periods. She said the Energy Ministry will keep developing a regulatory framework that supports battery storage investment, alongside new generation capacity and pumped-storage hydro.
Asarel-Trade manager Rumen Sabev Radev said the ceremony begins a long-term process covering site preparation, infrastructure, construction and grid connection, and expressed confidence the project will be completed on schedule. No commissioning date was given.
