July CPI: electricity and piped-gas prices rose while the overall energy index fell for the month.

BLS reported a 1.5% monthly decline in the overall energy index in July, alongside a 0.1% rise in electricity and a 0.7% rise in piped-gas service.

Confirmed facts

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the overall energy index declined 1.5% in July 2026. Gasoline fell 2.9%, while electricity increased 0.1% and utility piped-gas service increased 0.7%.

Over the 12 months ending in July, the energy index increased 14.7%. Electricity was up 4.2% and piped-gas service was up 4.3% over that period.

Analysis

The release shows that broad energy categories can move differently within the same month. A fall in the national energy index does not mean every household's utility costs fell, and a national increase in an electricity component does not establish a particular utility's rate change.

Unknowns and limits

CPI is a national price index, not a utility tariff or a bill. A household's electricity and gas costs depend on local approved rates, fixed charges, taxes, weather, and usage. The release does not forecast future bills or savings from an energy upgrade.
