Australia backs rooftop solar declaration targeting 300 million homes by 2030

The Global Solar Council reports Australia endorsed a plan to double solar homes worldwide. The 2030 figure is a target, not completed installations or a guaranteed household saving.

The Global Solar Council reports that Australia has become the first country to endorse the Global Rooftop Solar Declaration. Its release is posted October 7, 2026 and carries an October 8 dateline from Fiji, where the endorsement took place at the Pacific Pre-COP meeting.

The declaration supports the 300 Million Solar Homes initiative. The council estimates that around 150 million homes worldwide currently have rooftop solar and aims to double that number by 2030. The target describes a proposed expansion, not installations already completed.

Australia's Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, endorsed the declaration as President of Negotiations for COP31. Partners include the Global Solar Council, Smart Energy Council Australia and Solar Citizens.

The declaration calls for easier installation rules, access to affordable finance, grid upgrades and more training for local workers. It addresses solar and battery systems rather than a single technology mandate or an announced grant that every household can claim.

The council says rooftop solar is installed on more than 40 percent of Australian homes and supplies around an eighth of the country's electricity. Those are the council's reported figures, not a new independent measurement in this brief.

The announcement does not establish a binding global installation schedule, a universal household bill reduction or 2 terawatts of capacity already installed. Practical benefits depend on local prices, grid rules, financing and each property's installation costs.
