ACCIONA has been selected by VicGrid as the development partner for the Gippsland offshore wind 2 gigawatt transmission project, the infrastructure group announced on October 15.
The project will deliver the transmission infrastructure required to connect the first 2 gigawatts of offshore wind generation in the Gippsland region to Victoria's electricity grid. VicGrid is the Victorian state body coordinating development of the transmission needed for Australia's first declared offshore wind zone, off the Gippsland coast in the Bass Strait.
As development partner, ACCIONA will be responsible for further developing the financing solution, design, and construction, operation and maintenance scope of the project. The company said it will work alongside VicGrid, government stakeholders, Traditional Owners, landholders, local communities and industry partners as the project progresses toward delivery.
"ACCIONA is proud to bring the strength of our integrated business model, together with our extensive experience in delivering complex energy and infrastructure projects, to support Victoria's transition to a cleaner and more resilient energy future," said Peter Regan, CEO of ACCIONA Infrastructure Australia and New Zealand.
The Gippsland zone is central to Victoria's plan to replace retiring coal-fired generation in the Latrobe Valley over the coming decade; a coordinated transmission connection is intended to let multiple offshore wind developers share grid access rather than building separate radial lines.
The appointment is a development partnership, not a final construction contract: costs, final design and a construction timetable have not been announced.
